The Underground Monster League is a battle arena hosted by the supervillain Swarm. The insect supervillain captures random New Yorkers and mutates them into different creatures using animal formulas created The Jackal. Spider-Man, Spider-Girl, Spy-D, and Ghost-Spider are forced to enter the league after Swarm's Rhino combatants ambush the Web-Warriors. Initially, Swarm wanted to inject Spider-Man with a spider formula to mutate him into a Spider-Monster. Eventually, Swarm would do such a thing to three unnamed individuals.
How Swarm gained access to The Jackal's animal formulas or knew Aleksei Sytsevich was the original Rhino is currently unknown.

- Swarm most likely created the league after he captured the Web-Warriors. The Monster League Arena has the same aesthetics as the location Spider-Man first encountered Swarm when he was trying to free the Rhino who turned out to be someone else and not Aleksei.
- Evidence for this is when the Web-Warriors also brought along a police officer to inspect the location and Swarm was missing when they arrived.
- Hammerhead, his son Tully, and Silvermane were watching the fight, for Swarm commented that the criminal underworld, in particular, wanted to watch the Web-Warriors be defeated.
