Symbiotes (originally known as Klyntar) are a race of aliens in Marvel's Spider-Man. Venom aka the V-252 was the first symbiote to appear in the series, but in the third season, the entire race will make an appearance under Venom's leadership. The origin of the symbiotes is explorer further in the adjacent series Guardians of the Galaxy.[2]
Appearance[]
Klyntar of Planet y[]
In Guardians of the Galaxy, five symbiotes who go by the original species name Klyntar helped the Guardians to rid Groot's homeworld, Planet x, of the feral symbiotes that were created from their colony after Thanos kidnapped them and experimented on them.
It appears that these Klyntar were able to form mutualistic symbioses with the species they became the hosts to, for they eventually took on their shape and form. Guardians of the Galaxy.
Feral Symbiotes[]
In Guardians of the Galaxy, the feral symbiotes look exactly the same; being black in color with a white streak across their body. Unlike Venom, they appear to be a duller hue of black. These symbiotes were originally the benevolent klyntar until Thanos' experiments corrupted the creatures. After he failed to control the one he forcibly bonded to a young Gamora, he left the creatures on Planet X (Groot's homeworld) for many years.
In Marvel's Spider-Man: Maximum Venom the feral symbiotes appear to have similar facial features to Venom. While not confirmed, it is possible this may be due to Venom using the seed to contact them and form a hive mind of sorts.
Experimented Symbiotes[]
Symbiotes that are like Venom and Carnage that have been experimented on numerous times. Max Modell intended to use Venom as a new element of the periodic table, and later on, revealed that he wanted to use the symbiote as a new form of prosthetics. These experiments and more conducted by the Space Administration would increase Venom's durability against sounds and sonic weaponry. Even after trying to remove Venom from Eddie Brock, the Space Administration's further experiments caused Venom to evolve to the point of no longer needing to rely on a host body to move around.
The Carnage symbiote was experimented on by Thanos to the point of the creature becoming a non-living entity and it's coloring becoming red, which is unusual for the species.
The Synthetic-Symbiote is similar to the Carnage symbiote, in that it is non-living and is used for the purpose of being a tool.
Venomized[]
In Vengeance of Venom, many of Earth's heroes are corrupted by symbiotes that Venom uses in his symbiote army. Unlike regular citizens who are taken over by symbiotes, the venomized heroes retain some features of their original forms likely so they can be distinguished from ordinary citizens.
Symbiote Sisters[]
The Symbiote Sisters appear in the short The Secret History of Venom and will appear in Marvel's Spider Man Maximum Venom.
History[]
Origin[]
The Symbiotes were created billions of Earth years ago by an ancient, nearly immortal being known as Knull. Knull was at war with other cosmic beings called Celestials, who intended to bring light into the universe while Knull only desired darkness. As long as there was more darkness than light in the universe, Knull would remain stronger than the Celestials, but there were many of them. To combat the Celestials, Knull created four weapons, four living creatures that he would call the Klyntar. These Klyntar allowed Knull to slay nearly every Celestial in the universe while the rest fled into the deepest regions of space.
After Knull’s execution of the Celestials was over, he discarded the Klyntar despite their obedience and refusal to leave him. Knull had to use flames to force the symbiotes off of his body, and then he left them on the asteroid where he created them. The four Klyntar, however, stuck together and reformed into one after Knull left them alone. They stayed in solitude, feeling betrayed and forgotten. The sun that the asteroid orbited dyed out and the asteroid began to travel through the regions of space. Ages later, the four Klyntar were surprised to see a spaceship land on the asteroid. An explorer from another planet discovered them and unlike Knull, formed a mutualistic symbiosis with them. It made the Klyntar feel like they were more than just mere tools. The explorer returned to her homeworld, and the symbiotes began to replicate with the explorer’s entire race. The explorer, the four Klyntar, and three other individuals became the Sisters. On this new planet, the Klyntar found a new purpose and lived as equals among this new alien race.
However, one individual of the explorer’s race refused to bond a Klyntar. He told the people that the Klyntar were dangerous and that they were ruining their culture and identities. The Klyntar tried to show the individual the truth about the power they could bring him and share with him, but he refused the Klyntar and destroyed one of the Sisters. The Klyntar realized that they were betrayed once again. They vowed that they would never live in harmony with others ever again. Only in dominance. They claimed the explorer’s planet and named it Klyntar after themselves.
The three remaining sisters, Scream, Mania, and Scorn, used the remains of their dead sister to create two new weapons, a beast of fiery destruction, and Klyntar warrior who would later become known as the symbiote Venom. Venom helped his people spread from planet to planet, improving his abilities and helping his fellow Klyntar find new homes in the universe.
Eventually, Venom would learn of the planet called Earth. Initially, he believed the inhabitants to be weak until his encounter with the earthling known as Spider-Man...
At some point, a group of Klyntar had bonded to the animal-like inhabitants of an unnamed planet, actually managing to live in harmony with this species similar to what the Sisters intended with the explorer's race. Unfortunately, the mad-titan Thanos captured these Klyntar with plans to use them as weapons. After corrupting the klyntar into feral symbiotes, Thanos forced one to bond to his daughter, Gamora. Unsatisfied with not being able to control the creature, Thanos used a device to separate the symbiote and Gamora.
Hitchin' a Ride[]
The Guardians of the Galaxy encounter a batch of symbiotes on a planet they were visiting. Initially, one bond to Drax until the Guardians knock it off of him with sonic and heat weaponry. Rocket Raccoon uses a device to capture and contain all of the symbiotes, save for one that bonds to Groot and picks off the Guardians one by one. The Symbiote Groot traps Drax and Gamora in symbiote pods, and when attempting to capture Rocket and Star-Lord is defeated by the duo. This, however, destroys Groot due to his species being weak to sounds just like the symbiotes. Rocket ventures into his capture device to retrieve Groot's arm from a symbiote that has stolen it earlier. The symbiotes in the device are released upon the ravager Yondu and his crew.
The Symbiote Wars[]
The Guardians of the Galaxy discover a symbiote hive while they were visiting Groot's home planet, Planet X, to plant the planet's World Pod to restore Groot's people. Rocket Racoon is taken over by a symbiote and Gamora reveals that Thanos captured and experimented on symbiotes on Planet X hoping that the planets environment would help the creatures reproduce. Gamora, as a child, was used as a test subject, and when Thanos was displeased with the results, he used a device to painfully force the symbiote off of Gamora. The same device was used to force the symbiote off of Rocket Raccoon, who after being connected to the symbiote hive mind found out they were after Groot's Word Pod.
The Guardians were able to escape the symbiotes thanks to the help of five Klyntar symbiotes that formed a symbiosis with a species of animal-like aliens. Both groups detonate Planet X and escape to another planet to plant Groot's World Pod. The Klyntar promised to watch over it and share the planet alongside Groot's species when they grow from the soil. However, a piece of Groot's Planet broke off as an asteroid with feral symbiotes attached to it. The Guardians head to the planet Spartax to warn Star-Lord's sister about the asteroid infested with symbiotes. With their efforts, along with the arrival of Thor, they were able to save Spartax, but Thor would become infected by a lone symbiote after opening the Bifrost to Asgard.
Symbiotic Relationships[]
While failing to stop Black Cat from robbing Max Modell's laboratory, Peter Parker would find out that she stole the V-252 experiment. He would eventually retrieve from the thief and become a part of the group, along with Gwen Stacy, Anya Corazon, and Miles Morales, to study the substance for the Stark Expo.
During Sandman's rampage at Coney Island, Anya Corazon accidently spilled the V-252, which Spider-Man recovered for her. This was the first moment Spider-Man and the V-252 symbiote made contact, which gave Spider-Man a nervous feeling. Later on, after Spider-Man and Sandman's attempt to rescue his daughter Keemia from Hammerhead didn't go as expected, Keemia almost crushed Spider-Man with her sand powers until the V-252 rescued him, giving him a boost of power to defeat Keemia, Hammerhead, and his goons.
With the V-252 acting as a new costume, Spider-Man felt better and more confident as a hero. However, the V-252 was changing his personality from acting overly carefree to lashing out at others, including his Aunt May. Max Modell made the arachnid hero realize that he was going to far when attacking who they believed to be Adrian Toomes.
It was revealed that Norman Osborn had an interest in the V-252 and that he hired Black Cat to steal it from Horizon High. After Toomes dragged Spider-Man to Oscorp's helicopter pad, he discovered that the V-252 was a living symbiote and it was bonding to Spider-Man's DNA. Spider-Man realized that he couldn't get the symbiote off without Norman's help and allowed him, Toomes, and Alistair Smythe to remove it using the sonic scream devices in the Vulture suits.
Spider-Man returned the suit to Horizon High in time for the Stark Expo. However, he would have to rely on the symbiotes power once again when the villain Ghost gained the upper hand on himself and Iron Man. Everyone at the expo witnessed first hand the symbiotes influence of Spider-Man, and when he almost went to far with harming Ghost, Iron Man reminded Spider-Man of what he stands for as a hero.
Iron Man and Flash Thompson would help in removing the symbiote, with Iron Man telling Max Modell that he would put it in storage at Avengers Compound.
Birth of Venom[]
Sometime later, Spider-Man was attacked by someone else wearing the V-252 symbiote. The new host took on a monstrous form of Spider-Man's black suit, which the web-slinger dubbed Venom. Spider-Man's initial suspects were Tony Stark, Miles Morales, and Max Modell, but it turned out to be Flash Thompson who had a piece of the symbiote stick to him from the Stark Expo.
After getting the symbiote off of Flash, he and Spider-Man used fire extinguishers to freeze the symbiotes off of Truman High football players and helped Max Modell and Mr. Salmero collect the pieces.
Thanos' Carnage[]
With his Venom Positioning System detecting symbiotes under the New York subways near Central Park, Spider-Man went to investigate and came across the Guardians of the Galaxy. Though there was a misunderstanding between the heroes initially, the group came together to defeat the red-and-black symbiote(s) in the tunnels. However, it turns out the symbiote was on a mission to retrieve Thanos from where the Guardians buried him during their previous battle with him on Earth.
With the power of his symbiote, Thanos was on route to Horizon High to retrieve the Venom symbiote and use it to turn New York City into his personal symbiote army. Before Thanos could command Venom to bond with him, Rocket Raccoon would tossed Peter at the symbiote, giving him enough power to be on equal footing with Thanos, which left the mad titan surprised.
However, Thanos was able to manipulate Spider-Man while he wore the Venom symbiote and the pain caused Spider-Man to take on the symbiotes monstrous appearance. Thanks to Rocket Raccoon, Spider-Man was able to control the symbiote long enough to subdue Thanos, and with the help of the Guardians they were able to turn Thanos' symbiote into a solid and make it into restraints for Thanos.

Powers and Abilities[]
Symbiotes can manipulate their bodies into many shapes, sizes, and forms. It is unknown as to why Venom was never able to do this until being experimented on multiple times.
Symbiotes can spread their biomass onto others in order to corrupt them. In Vengeance of Venom, it appears that this actually gives birth to new symbiotes seeing as they had slightly different personalities from the original one.
While symbiotes can use the abilities of the hosts they possess, abilities like magic are foreign to them due to assumingly no magic users existing in Space. Doctor Strange's symbiote claimed that he had to get used to Strange's abilities as they were skills symbiotes had never used before.
The symbiotes also have a hive-mind of sorts, something Rocket Raccoon noted after his fellow Guardians were able to remove one from him. Even after the symbiote was removed Rocket could remember what he saw within the hive-mind while the creature possessed him.[3] Likewise, the symbiotes can share the memories of each other's hosts with one another as mentioned by Doctor Strange's symbiote when Spider-Man questioned him on how he knew the location of his home.
Symbiotes are also capable of voice mimicry, for Venom copied Eddie Brock's speech pattern after becoming powerful enough to move around without a host,[4] and Groot's first symbiote mimicked the voices of the other Guardians as a means to taunt Rocket Raccoon.[5]
According to Groot's first symbiote, when bonded to Groot's species due to their plant-like traits the symbiotes can spread their bio-mass as spores and infect an entire population at a faster rate than normal.[6] Spider-Man and Max Modell would use this trait of Groot's species to their advantage when turning Venomized Groot into ANTIVENOM and having him spread his spores throughout New York to cure the citizens and heroes of their symbiotes.

Trivia[]
- This is the first time the symbiotes have had their origins and species explored in television aside from appearances of the Venom and Carnage symbiotes.
- In the Guardians of the Galaxy episode Drive My Carnage, Star-Lord was surprised when Peter told him the V-252 was found on Earth, meaning that the symbiotes are not found in Earth's solar system.
- The Secret History of Venom would reveal that the Symbiotes were created by Knull, and that Venom himself was created by the Symbiote Sisters.
- The Secret History of Venom would also, indirectly, explain the origins of the five Klyntar from Guardians of the Galaxy.
- This is the first Spider-Man animated series where characters besides Peter Parker and Eddie Brock (and Cletus Kasady) gain their own, individual, symbiote/symbiote form.
- The previous series Ultimate Spider-Man had others infected by the venom, anti-venom, and carnage symbiotes, but not other individual symbiotes.
- Ghost-Spider is the only character whose venomized form is lifted straight from the comics with a few minor tweaks.
- Captain America's venomized form was the first one revealed at New York Comic Con 2019.
- The term venomized is taken from the comic book of the same name.
- It is currently unknown if the venomized heroes are different from a normal symbiote host. The only noticeable difference is that the venomized heroes are only partially covered by their symbiotes as seen with Spider-Man, Spy-D, and Groot.
- Despite having gained a symbiote in the comic book Venomized, Ms. Marvel is not one of the heroes who will gain a venomized form.
- The peaceful Klyntar in Guardians of the Galaxy has red eyes, similar to the symbiote Sleeper from the Marvel Comics.
- The feral symbiotes seen in Guardians of the Galaxy have different designs than the ones seen in Marvel's Spider-Man. In the latter, they have an appearance similar to Venom.
- Ben Pronsky, Venom and Eddie Brock's voice actor, said in an interview that Venom comes from the planet Klyntar. The planet would later be shown off in The Secret History of Venom video.
- Out of all the heroes, when counting the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series, Groot has bonded with the most symbiotes. Two feral symbiotes, one Klyntar, and the ANTIVENOM symbiote.
- Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, and Hulk (Bruce Banner) are the only Avengers Spider-Man has met to not have been shown being possessed by a symbiote during Vengeance of Venom.
- Venom was thought to be dead by Doctor Strange's symbiote in Vengeance of Venom.
- In the same episode, ANTIVENOM Groot's spores destroyed all of the symbiotes that infected the New York populace. Going by Maximum Venom, this destroyed every symbiote except for Venom, Scream, Mania, Scorn, and the good Klyntar.
- It appears that the species of the alien explorer who found the Symbiote Sisters is who the entire symbiote race uses as basis for their humanoid forms. The explorer and her people have an eye socket shape similar to the lenses in Spider-Man's costume.
- The symbiotes in Guardians of the Galaxy appear to have bonded to more animal-like aliens, which would explain why they look different from the symbiotes in Marvel's Spider-Man.
- Considering that the Symbiote Sisters created him to be a powerful warrior, and that the symbiotes in Vengence of Venom wanted to honor his sacrifice of summoning them to Earth, Venom appears to be a messiah figure for his fellow symbiotes.
- Despite this, Scream, Scorn, and Mania, specifically Scream who expressed it, considered Venom a failure.
