Spider-Man Unmasked is the fifty-sixth episode of Marvel's Spider-Man and the fourth episode of season 3 Maximum Venom.

Synopsis

Disney XD

After Spider-Man’s friend is turned back into the rampaging Rhino by Swarm, Spidey is forced to battle for his life in the Underground Monster League contest.[1]

  • Yvette Nicole Brown (“Community”) guest stars as Head Administrator.

Plot

Part 1

When Spider-Man discovers his friend Aleksei has been turned back into the rampaging Rhino, Spidey finds himself involved in dangerous underground experiments led by the villain Swarm.

Part 2

Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Spider-Girl, and Ghost-Spider are forced by the supervillain Swarm into battling for their lives in a gladiatorial-type contest called the Underground Monster League.

Trivia

  • According to Anya, it's been two months since the events of the previous three episodes.[2]
  • This is the first appearance of Aleksei since Venom Returns and the first appearance of Rhino since Take Two. However, Aleksei is only seen as one of the three Rhinos throughout the entire episode.
    • Ironically, it is unknown which rhino Aleksei was, except for the one Spider-Man brought back to Horizon.
  • Peter reveals himself as Spider-Man to Gwen and Anya, who at first feel hurt by Peter keeping it a secret from them, but after Peter learns how to explain reasons to them from Mary Jane, both girls forgive him.[3]
    • It is also revealed that Connor's somehow figured out Peter was Spider-Man, which is why Peter had to reveal himself to his friends and the school board. The Head Administrator promised to keep Peter's identity a secret, but Spider-Man can no longer set foot on Horizon grounds.
  • The weapon Spider-Man and Spider-Girl build to defeat Swarm has a similar appearance to the one Spider-Girl wields in her 6-inch figure from Hasbro's Marvel's Spider-Man Toyline.[4]
  • Jackal is referenced throughout the entire episode, for Swarm had a collection of his animal formulas.
  • The Neuro Cortex is revealed to have been destroyed after the battle during the Goblin Wars.
  • Peter uses a recording of Otto to testify for Max, the Doctor had said kind words about Modell after reforming. However, Doctor Connors turned Peter's evidence against Max by reminding the school of Otto's criminal past.
  • Doctor Connor's associate is shown sitting behind a chair and is voiced by Josh Keaton.[5]
    • Swarm was also working for this person, for the Unidentified Voice called Swarm his underling when watching the Underground Monster League.
  • This is the first reappearance of Hammerhead since My Own Worst Enemy and his son Tully since How I Thwipped My Summer Vacation.
  • The Spider-Monsters in the episode bears a resemblance to the New Yorkers infected by the spider-virus during the Spider-Island saga. The only difference being that they are beige in this episode instead of green.

Errors

  • The scene where Spider-Man wakes up in the cage, after Spider-Girl says, "not great", the blue parts of his costume are black for a few frames.
