"Look, you're a great role model, Pete. And if Otto can't see that, then maybe he needs mechanical eyes instead of arms."

Miles Morales is a major protagonist of Marvel's Spider-Man. He is a fellow student of Peter Parker's at Horizon High and a former student of Doctor Otto Octavius . When helping Spider-Man fight crime in the city, he suits up in a red and black version of Spider-Man's outfit, usually initially referred to as the second Spider-Man, but later on, adopts the name Spy-D as given to him by Ghost-Spider.[3]

Miles currently lives with Peter Parker and May Parker in Forest Hills, Queens because of his father, Jefferson Davis, having been revealed as the villain Swarm.[4]

Appearance

Physical appearance

Miles is an African-Latino teenage boy with black hair and brown eyes.

Civilian attire

Miles is usually seen wearing jackets during each episode.

As Spy-D

Kid Arachnid Square

Miles as "Spy-D/Kid Arachnid/The Ultimate Spider-Man."

As Spy-D, Miles wears a costume based on Spider-Man's that he has designed himself. It is a red and black spandex outfit that is similar to Spider-Mans, except for the v-shape connecting from his shoulders to his chest. His spider symbol is also a different design from Spider-Man's.

Personality

Miles is very intelligent for his age and is more outgoing among his friends. Sometimes he might act before he thinks, as seen when he tried to open the Supervillain Holding Facilities control panel with an electro sting.

In Ultimate Spider-Man, it is shown that Miles use to get picked on by the kids in his neighborhood for being short, which is something that upset him greatly until he worked with Spider-Man and learned that using his powers to help others is better than using them for personal gain.

It appears that Miles may have developed a mild form melissophobia (a fear of bees) after finding out his father was Swarm. In Maximum Venom he mentions that anytime he sees a bee he thinks it might be a spy for his father.

History

Relationships

Jefferson Davis/Swarm

Jefferson Davis is Miles father. Miles holds a lot of respect for his father, though he can be embarrassed by him at times as seen when he tried to get two kids to stop bullying Miles because of his height. When Alistair Smythe and Spencer Smythe attacked their neighborhood looking for Miles (Spy-D), Miles did everything in his power to protect his neighbor and his dad, discovering his electricity manipulation powers when seeing him and Spider-Man (Peter Parker) in danger.

In Generations, Miles found that his father was the villain Swarm and heartbroken that he allowed Osborn and Jackal to turn himself into living bees because he blamed Miles, as Spy-D, for putting the neighborhood and his son (Miles) in danger multiple times. When Miles revealed himself as the spider Swarm loathed so much, Jefferson was downhearted and ran away, not being able to face his son after what he could have done to him.

Peter Parker

Kraven's Amazing Hunt (213)

Miles is the first person Peter revealed himself to as Spider-Man. From that moment on Miles understood why keeping a secret identity was important to Peter and was quick to stick up for him as both Peter Parker and Spider-Man.

Miles is one of Peter's closest friends, and most likely his first real friend at Horizon High. Miles was easier on him than Anya when they first met, believing that even if Peter was a slacker he would come through for them when it comes to studying and group projects. Miles was also the first person Peter revealed his identity, Spider-Man too. Ever since then their bond has grown to the point where Miles considers Peter a great hero, an amazing mentor, and a best friend.

Anya Corazon

Anya Corazon and Miles Morales - MSM 2017 - The Day Without Spider-Man

Miles and Anya have been friends for a long time and work well together alongside Peter and Gwen. As Spy-D and Spider-Girl the two are often paired together when they split-up from Spider-Man and Ghost-Spider, showing how well the two work together.

Miles and Anya are close friends, having known each other prior to Peter enrolling at Horizon High. The two often work together on projects and study groups alongside Peter and Gwen. Unlike Anya, Miles didn't think of Peter as a slacker or flake, seeing the best in him before anything else.

When Miles revealed to Anya, Gwen, and Peter that he has spider-powers in Ultimate Spider-Man, Anya was also excited at the fact that anyone could possibly receive spider-powers. Miles is also the second person she revealed her identity, Spider-Girl, too. While she finds Miles' optimism annoying at times, they keep a solid friendship.

During Spider-Island Part Three, Anya was excited to see that Miles finished the work on her cure for the Spider-Virus and said that she could kiss him, to which he reacts with a giggle.

Miles and Anya Couple

Anya changing her dress to match the corsage Miles gives her for the dance.

In Maximum Venom Miles and Anya attended Horizon's dance together as a couple. Miles gave Anya a corsage and she changed the color of her dress using her necklace to match the rose.

Gwen Stacy

Gwen is another good friend of Miles. When Miles reveals that he has spider-powers, Gwen is enthusiastic about his powers and wants to study how he received them. When her powers were reactivated by the blood gem, she wore a mask as Ghost-Spider implied to be inspired by Miles' training. Gwen is also the one responsible for Miles' new hero name Spy-D.

Harry Osborn

Miles and Harry are friends. Originally, like Spider-Man, Harry was distrusting of him due to the Jackal's experiments for a spider-army.

May Parker

At some point Miles met Peter's Aunt May,and received her phone number. in case of emergencies

Max Modell

Miles holds a lot of respect for Max due to him being the headmaster of Horizon and one of his instructors.

Otto Octavius

Miles always considered Otto a cruel teacher for the amount of quizzes he gives his students. Upon him becoming Doc-Ock, Miles noted that it was due to his ego and Norman Osborn framing him for the Lizard attack.

During the aftermath of Goblin War: Part Four, Miles noted that despite everything Otto has done to them in the past year, the city owed him their thanks because of the sacrifice he made to stop Adrian Toomes from ruling the city.

Norman Osborn

Like Peter, Miles grew to distrust Norman because of the man trying to capture and dissect the two in order to figure out the secret of their powers. Before then, Miles didn't express an opinion of the man.

Abilities

Miles Morales Power Stats

Spider-physiology

Miles gained the proportionate abilities of a spider after being bitten by one of Raymond Warren's genetically-enhanced experimental spiders.

Electro-sting

Named during Kraven's Amazing Hunt. With this power, Miles charges red electricity in his hands and can use it to stun enemies and overload technology. He can also manipulate the electricity to take on a form similar to his webbing and fire it as a stream.

Venom blast

Miles has only used this ability twice. While unable to break free from the grasp of Spencer Smythe's Spider-Slayer, along with seeing his father and Spider-Man in danger, Miles unleashed a his most powerful electro-sting in the form of an energy burst. The second time he used this ability was during his fight against Adrian Toomes' Goblin Mech to allow Ghost-Spider to escape with an unconscious Spider-Man and Spider-Girl.

Spider-Camouflage

Miles has the ability to turn invisible and blend in with his surroundings. He has used this ability multiple times to catch his enemies off-guard. Though, he can still be detected by heat signatures as shown by Spider-Man using his lenses to find him in Kraven's Amazing Hunt.

Trivia

  • Miles is fifteen years old in season one, and sixteen years old in seasons two and three.
    • This is the first time in any Spider-Man continuity in which Miles and Peter are the same age.
  • The name Kid Arachnid originated in the previous series, Ultimate Spider-Man.
    • Despite not having been named in the show, promotional material, the Marvel HQ website, and an early draft of the script for Spider-Island Part One has Gwen refer to Miles' superhero name as Kid Arachnid.
    • The Disney+ streaming service uses the Kid Arachnid name for episodes featuring Miles.
    • Miles has referred to himself as Spider-Kid in the episode Ultimate Spider-Man, but never used it as an official codename.
    • In Goblin War: Part Three, Ghost-Spider jokingly calls him Spy-D and when Spider-Girl calls him it in a casual manner he asks if that's what they're calling him now.
    • Walt Disney Press releases for the show refer to Miles as Kid Arachnid, even after the airing of Goblin War: Part Four.
  • As of Goblin War: Part Four, Miles' official hero name in the show is Spy-D. Despite this, he is only called Miles in the season 3 credits.
    • Spy-D was originally a rumored new code name for Miles after his creator, Brian Michael Bendis, left Marvel Comics to work for DC Comics.[5]
    • Closed captions for the show (or at least the preview videos released for the episodes on the Marvel HQ youtube channel) refer to Miles as Spy-D for episodes after season 2.
  • Despite his venomized form being revealed first, Miles' symbiote form from the Absolute Carnage comic book was featured a year before Maximum Venom premiered.
  • Unlike comic books and various other media, Miles lives in Manhattan as opposed to Brooklyn. This is noticeable in the episode "Ultimate Spider-Man" where Oscorp tower is in view fromofes' neighborhood.
    • Ironically, the 2020 video game Spider-Man: Miles Morales would also feature it's version of Miles Morales living in Manhattan, specifically it's Harlem section.
  • According to his Venom File video, Miles' strength-level is slightly weaker than Peter's.
  • In Maximum Venom (Episode) Miles is staying with Peter and Aunt May in Forest Hills, Queens, after his father was revealed to be Swarm. This means that it's possible his mother from the Marvel Comics, Rio Morales is deceased in this universe and that his uncle, Aaron Davis, doesn't exist as well.
    • Miles living with Peter and May is also a reference to the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, where that version of Gwen Stacy became a guest of the Parker Household after her father was killed by someone impersonating Spider-Man.
