"You're not seriously side-lining me, are you, Parker? Because Gwen's my best friend, so I'm staying."

Anya Corazon (Aña Corazon) is one of the protagonists of Marvel's Spider-Man. She is a classmate and friend of Peter Parker at Horizon High, best friends with Gwen Stacy, friends with Miles Morales, and former student of Doctor Otto Octavius. When helping Spider-Man fight crime she suits up as the hero Spider-Girl.

 Appearance

Physical appearance

Anya is a Latina (half Puerto Rican; half Mexican) teenage girl with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Civilian attire

Anya wears a blue shirt with a star throughout most of season 1. In season 2 she wears a pink polo shirt in all of her appearances except for How I Thwipped My Summer Vacation and Between an Ock and a Hard Place. In season 3 Anya wears a sweater with a white polo shirt and necktie underneath it.

As Spider-Girl

Spider-Girl Square

Anya as "The Amazing Spider-Girl."

As Spider-Girl she where's a black spandex costume with a white spider symbol connecting from the shoulder down. She also wears her hair in a ponytail; most likely so it won't get in the way while she is fighting.

Spider-Girl (Season 3)

Anya's Second Spider-Girl suit.

Sometime after the events of the Goblin Wars, Anya changed the color of her Spider-Girl suit. The colors are now inverted to where the suit and soles are now white and her spider-symbol is black like Spider-Man's.

A noticeable difference from her friend's spider-suits is Anya's preference for a cowl mask instead of a full mask.

Personality

While friendly, Anya has no tolerance for slackers or anyone who does not take their work seriously. When compared to Gwen, she is more of a tom-boy. Before Horizon threw its first dance she appeared to have a dislike or no interest in the activity. Anya is also very intelligent for her age; having built a machine that creates vibranium and a scrambler that can shut down any machinery.

As Spider-Girl, Anya has shown to be bold, confident, and strong-minded; having fought The Spot and Beetle without showing fear.

History

Relationships

Maria Corazon

Anya Corazon and Maria Corazon - MSM 2017 - Generations

Maria was Anya's biggest inspiration for pursuing the field of science.

Maria is Anya's step-sister and her major influence in her interest of science. In Generations, it appeared that Maria became a member of Horizon's faculty at the request of Doctor Connor's, however it was actually the Chameleon masquerading as Maria at the request of Norman Osborn creating a team to go up against the Web-Warriors. Anya was almost fooled by Chameleon's imitation of Maria until Anya started asking questions about their other sister Angela and how Maria gave Anya a microscope for her first day at Horizon. In actuality, it was laptop and Anya saw through Chameleon's ruse.

Afterwards, Anya called Maria to make sure she was still okay. She was glad to hear that her older sister was still on her Rainforest Research Expedition.

Gwen Stacy

Anya Corazon and Gwen Stacy - MSM 2017 - Spider-Man Unmasked

Anya and Gwen have a sisterly bond that is only the peak of their friendship. The two have been there for each other masks on and off.

Gwen is Anya's best friend and the two have a strong and sister-like friendship. This shown during the Spider-Island Part Three where Anya was the only person capable of getting Gwen to calm down while she was a spider-monster. This is also seen in Bring on the Bad Guys Part Two when the two were collaborating on their open house project together. Gwen was also the only person to know that Anya kept her powers from Spider-Island due to testing a prototype cure on herself. When Anya hesitated to step in and help Spider-Man when The Spot captured him, Gwen persuaded her to step up and become The Amazing Spider-Girl.

Peter Parker

Osborn Academy (249)

While Anya was harsh on Peter when they first meet, the two have become close friends during their time together at Horizon High.

When they first met, Anya was upset with Peter for ruining the project she had worked on for Horizon's presentation at Midtown High. Later on, more noticeably during Spider-Island, Anya begins to warm up to Peter and see him as a good friend.

Anya's opinion of Spider-Man, in contrast to Gwen's, was greatly different than hers on Peter. She appreciated Spider-Man for saving her life twice, defending him from Harry's accusations, and even repaid the favor once becoming Spider-Girl.

After Peter regained his body from Doc-Ock, Anya and Gwen were not speaking to Peter due to how Ock treated them while in Peter's body, but forgave him when he apologized for his (Ock's) actions in Goblin War: Part Four.

In Spider-Man Unmasked Anya and Gwen were surprised and hurt that Peter never told them that he was Spider-Man, going as far as to ignore him during their search for their friend Aleksei Sytsevich when he was turned into the Rhino again. During the Underground Monster League, both Anya and Gwen apologized after Peter apologized himself. The three friends rekindled by saying each of them only wanted to portect one another.

Miles Morales

Anya Corazon and Miles Morales - MSM 2017 - The Day Without Spider-Man

Anya and Miles have been friends for a long time and work well together alongside Peter and Gwen. As Spy-D and Spider-Girl the two are often paired together when they split-up from Spider-Man and Ghost-Spider, showing how well the two work together.

Anya and Miles are good friends, having known each other prior to Peter enrolling at Horizon High. The two often work together on projects and study groups alongside Peter and Gwen. Unlike Miles, Anya saw Peter as a slacker and a flake while Miles believed the best in Peter.

When Miles revealed to Anya, Gwen, and Peter that he has spider-powers in Ultimate Spider-Man, Anya was also excited at the fact that anyone could possibly receive spider-powers. Miles is also the second person she revealed her identity, Spider-Girl, too. While she finds Miles' optimism annoying at times, they keep a solid friendship.

During Spider-Island Part Three, Anya was excited to see that Miles finished the work on her cure for the Spider-Virus and said that she could kiss him, to which he reacts with a giggle.

When Miles was unable to break into the cellar, Anya was the first person he called on for help and was surprised by the fact that she still had spider powers. Afterward, with Spider-Man absent, Miles took it upon himself to train her, despite her opinion of him not being a very good teacher. Nevertheless, the Anya and Miles have strong bond that's equal in strength to their friendship and their teamwork as Spider-Girl and Spy-D.

Miles and Anya Couple

In Maximum Venom Anya and Miles attended Horizon's dance together as a couple. Miles gave Anya a corsage and she changed the color of her dress using her necklace to match the rose.

Harry Osborn

Anya and Harry are good friends, though she didn't share his initial opinion of Spider-Man being a villain.

Max Modell

Anya has a lot of respect for Max, him being the founder of Horizon and one of her instructors.

Otto Octavius

While Anya never mentioned how she felt about him during season one, during season two she was untrusting of Otto due to him having mind-controlled Alesksei, and having him remain in his rhino form. Afterward, she like everyone else trusted him until she, along with Miles and Gwen, were used as batteries for Ock's experiment with the neuro-cortex

During the aftermath of Goblin War Anya admitted that she didn't think a man like Otto could change, but she was proven wrong after he sacrificed himself to defeat Adrian Toomes.

Abilities

Genius-level Intellect

Anya is very intelligent and resourceful for a teenager of her age.

Spider Physiology

Anya possesses the proportionate abilities of a spider after treating herself with an experimental cure to the Spider-Island virus. As a result, she received off-shoot powers of Spider-Mans with the addition of organic web-shooters. The only powers of Spider-Man that she lacks is the spider-sense.

  • Wall-Crawling: Anya has the ability to cling to walls at will.
  • Superhuman Strength: Following the events of Spider-Island, Anya's strength has increased to a level comparable to Spider-Man's.
  • Superhuman Durability: Anya's body is physically tougher and more resistant to some types of injury than the body of a normal human. Her body is more resistant to impact forces than anything else. She can withstand great impacts, such as struck by an opponent with super-strength, that would severely injure or kill a normal human with little to no discomfort
  • Superhuman Stamina: Anya's advanced musculature produces fewer fatigue toxins during physical activity than an ordinary human. This allows her to exert himself physically for much longer periods of time before fatigue begins to impair her.
  • Superhuman Agility: Anya's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are all enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Anya's reflexes are similarly enhanced and are currently about 10 times greater than those of an ordinary human.

Organic Web-shooters

After gaining powers from the Spider-Island virus, Anya gained the ability to shoot her own webbing from spinneret glands on her wrist. She shares this trait with Gwen.

Trivia

  • Anya is fifteen years old in season one, and sixteen years old in seasons two and three.
  • This is Anya Corazon's first animated appearance.
    • Had the previous series, Ultimate Spider-Man continued into a fifth season, Anya would have made her debut in that series, according to Stephen Wacker's posts on his inactive Tumblr blog.
    • It is possible Anya was a late addition to the show, due to her lack of appearances on early promotional artwork with Peter, Miles, and Gwen.
    • Many fans often contribute her appearance in the series is due to Stephen Wacker being a (former) co-executive producer for Marvel's Spider-Man and one of the editors and creators of her comic book series.
  • In an interview with, Melanie Minichino, Anya's voice actress, she said that Anya was hard on Peter at the beginning of the series because she wants to see him do well.[3]
  • In the Marvel Comics, Anya originally went by the name codename Araña and debuted in the relaunch of Amazing Fantasy, the same magazine that featured Spider-Man's debut.
  • Anya is the only main character to have neither one of her parents mentioned by her or another character. It wouldn't be until Generations that their would mention of her parents (and family) at all.
    • Anya has a step-mother (unamed) and two step-sisters: Maria Corazon and Angela Corazon.
    • In the Marvel Comics, both of her parents are deceased. Anya's mother died while she was still a child while her father died during the rampage of a mind-controlled Red Hulk. She had no other known relatives in the comics.
  • This will be the first time in any media that Anya is featured in a story arc relating to symbiotes and bonds with one.
    • In the comics, her original powers came from a sentient carapace that was similar to, yet not a symbiote.
  • Spider-Girl's costume is different between the show and merchandise. In the show, it is the same outfit as in the comic books, but her designs on merchandise invert the colors. Whether this is, or was, a proposed redesign is unknown.
    • The Marvel Super Hero Adventures series and the Demolition Days comic use the white and black costume, instead of the regular black and white from the main Marvel Comics.
    • The only toyline for the show to feature her black and white costume are the minimate figures.
    • Anya wears her white and black costume in Maximum Venom.
    • The spider-symbol on Anya's original costume is shaped like a skull near the bottom. This is similar to the False Widow spiders that have a mark on their back that has been said to resemble a skull.
  • While the origin of her powers originates with Spider-Island in the show, it was how her powers were restored in the comic books.
    • The Marvel HQ websites profile for Spider-Girl is written ambiguously to reference both her comic and television series origin.
  • This series is the second time Anya has been a teenager at the same time as Peter. In the Marvel Adventures comic series that featured a teenage Peter, Anya made a cameo appearance as Spider-Girl in a panel in one issue.
  • Due to Anya and Gwen's strong friendship on the show, fans have created a ship (a pairing, usually romantic, between to fictional characters) called Gwenya.
  • Fans of the show have said that unlike Miles and Harry, Anya and Gwen are not as close to or know Peter that well despite being friends.
    • This was fueled by the two of them not speaking to Peter anymore after the events of the Superior Spider-Man Saga and accusing him of being a member of the Goblin Nation in Goblin War: Part One.
    • Many fans have also compared Anya's character in the show to a character from the Marvel Comics, Sajani Jaffrey. Like Jaffrey, Anya was hard on Peter due to him disappearing when needed and showed a huge annoyance due to him being a flake. However, Anya grew to like Peter overtime while Jaffrey was trying to ruin his career, even working with villains to achieve the goal.
  • Anya is the only Web-Warrior who does not utilize web-wings.
  • Anya and Gwen are the only two characters of the main cast to change outfits each season.
  • Spider-Girl's Venomized formed in the show is actually based on the second design for her promotional artwork by Patrick Brown.[4]
  • Despite being part of the main cast, Anya has not received any form of merchandise in the toyline for Maximum Venom.
    • Fans speculate this is because of Marvel pushing a focus of Peter, Miles, and Gwen due to the success and critical acclaim of the movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
    • Anya also shares this with Iron Heart.
    • The second wave of the Venom Burst toyline would add Anya into the series of figures for thaat toyline.[5]
  • In season 3, Anya's skin tone became noticeably darker. This matches with the promotional artwork Patrick Brown created for her toys in Hasbro's Marvel's Spider-Man toyline.
    • Ironically in Spider-Man Unmasked, Anya helps Peter created a weapon similar to the one she wields in her 6-inch figure from Hasbro's Marvel's Spider-Man Toyline.[6]
